WHAT CHRISTMAS IS LIKE IN THE “SIERRA DE CHIHUAHUA”
The Tarahumara Place.
In the tarahumara mountain range there is a Village called SISOGUCHI wich means place of flowers. On this site are celebrated The Christmas very particular in the purest style of tarahumaras culture.
It is a mixture of Pre-hispanic customs and catholic doctrine, the place was founded by the Jesuit priest Don Antonio Oreña in 1676.
This resulted in a Christmas celebration with the atmosphere of the indigene tarahumaras, with that sense of mystery.
On December 08 they celebrate a popular dance with the “Matachines” repeating this dance on December 12 the Day of the Guadalupe Virgin, December 24 Christmas day and December 31, again in January 6th.
The tres Reyes day. It’s impressive to see several indigenous groups dancing outside the temple all night long. Giving color and feeling to this important celebration.
For the tarahumaras dance is a prayer with it they ask for giveness implore rain and thank God, his main God according to Christ is called “ONORUAME” they dance to avoid disease and thank for the blessings.
To be ther to witness that ritual and to share Christmas next to the indigenous it´s a privilege and an unforgettable experience. This celebration encourages everyone to behave well and work hard all year round and remember the importance of this ceremony.
