ISLA MUJERES
Isla Mujeres, the name of which was imposed by Francisco Hernández de Córdova, captain of the Spanish expedition in 1517. However, the island was part of a Mayan province called Ekab, 564 and 1516 AD. It was a site of great importance for the trade between Itzáes and Cocomes. The island was also part of an important sanctuary consecrated to the goddess Ixchel. Today the island is one of the most important in Mexico and visited by thousands of tourists.
